Actor Profile: A. J. Cook

A. J. Cook

A.J. Cook, born Andrea Joy Cook on July 22, 1978, in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, is a Canadian actress widely recognized for her role as Supervisory Special Agent Jennifer "JJ" Jareau on the CBS crime drama "Criminal Minds." Cook started her career as a dancer but shifted her focus to acting at the age of 16, beginning with commercials and guest roles on Canadian television shows.

Her acting breakthrough came with her role in the 1999 film "The Virgin Suicides," directed by Sofia Coppola. Although her role was not central, the film's success helped boost her career. She then gained prominence with her lead role in the horror film "Final Destination 2" in 2003, a box office success. However, it was her role in "Criminal Minds," which she joined in 2005, that cemented her status in the acting world. Her character, initially the team's communications liaison, evolved into a full-fledged profiler, and Cook's portrayal was praised for its depth and realism.

Beyond "Criminal Minds," Cook has appeared in a variety of other TV shows and movies, including the TV series "Higher Ground" and films like "Out Cold" and "Tru Calling." She has occasionally returned to the horror genre, with roles in movies like "Ripper" and "Wer."

In her personal life, Cook is known for being relatively private. She married Nathan Andersen in 2001, and they have two children together. Cook has severe astigmatism and is legally blind, wearing contacts and glasses to correct her vision. She is also an advocate for various causes, including animal rights and children's charities, and is admired for her down-to-earth, approachable demeanor.

Throughout her career, Cook has been recognized for her performances, and while she may not have a lengthy list of awards, her consistent presence in a hit TV show for over a decade speaks to her talent and appeal. Following the end of "Criminal Minds" in 2020, Cook's future projects and roles are a subject of interest for fans eager to see her continue her acting career. Her journey from dance to screen is marked by a signature role that has defined much of her professional life, earning her a loyal fan base and a respected place in the entertainment industry.
